Fall Color at Lost Maples: A Hill Country Engagement Session Plan
Fall color is not what most people picture when they think of Texas, but Lost Maples State Natural Area is a well known exception. I'm a destination wedding photographer based in Austin, Texas, and this guide uses the park's own information from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Check the park before you go, since details can change.
The basics
The park is at 37221 F.M. 187 in Vanderpool. The adult entrance fee is listed at $6. Hours are listed as 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The park lists its peak seasons as October to November and March to May. See the Lost Maples publications page.
Check the foliage reports
The park posts weekly foliage reports, so you can see how the color is coming along before you drive out. They are here: Lost Maples foliage reports. Color changes from year to year with weather, so be ready to adjust your date.
Plan for the hours
Because the park closes at 4:30 p.m., you will not be shooting at sunset inside the gates. Plan for late morning or early afternoon light, and arrive when the gates open if you want fewer people.
Photography rules
I did not find specific photography rules on the pages I read. If you are hiring a photographer, ask the park whether a permit applies.
What to wear
Warm tones and neutrals look great against fall foliage. A layer for cool mornings helps. Wear shoes you can walk in.
Make a day of it
It is a drive from Austin, so plan your day with travel time in mind. Bring water and snacks, and know that services near the park may be limited.

A sample plan for the day
Check the foliage report a few days before. Leave early, since the drive is long and the park has set hours. Arrive when the gates open and walk the area where color is strongest. Take a break for water and snacks. Plan portraits in the best light while the park is open, and leave before closing time.
What to bring
Water, snacks, a layer for cool mornings, comfortable shoes, and a charged phone. Cell service can be limited in the Hill Country, so download directions before you go.
Common questions
Is the color guaranteed? No. It depends on the weather that year, which is why the park posts weekly reports. Can we go in spring? The park lists March to May as a peak season too. Is it good for a short ceremony? Ask the park first about permits and rules.
Why plan ahead
Fall color is short, and good weekends fill up. If you want a session at peak color, check the reports and pick a flexible date. Then reach out so we can plan around the light.
