Why Location Matters: Choosing the Perfect Bend Setting for Your Photoshoot

When it comes to capturing those unforgettable moments in Bend, Oregon, the location we choose for your photoshoot plays a huge role in the final outcome. As a photographer, I’ve always believed that where we shoot is just as important as how we shoot. The backdrop sets the tone, influences the mood, and can transform an ordinary photo into something truly magical.

Lighting is Everything

One of the first things I consider when selecting a location is the lighting. In my experience, lighting can make or break a photoshoot, so I’m very intentional about where and when we shoot. Bend’s diverse landscapes offer a variety of options, from the soft, golden light at Smith Rock to the breathtaking sunsets along the Cascade Lakes Highway. I always make sure we schedule your session during a time of day when the light is soft and flattering, or when the clouds are just right for a beautiful sunset. Even if the conditions aren’t perfect—like the smoky haze during fire season—I’ll find a way to turn it into something unique and stunning.

Accessibility Matters

While I love the adventure of exploring Bend’s more remote locations, I always prioritize accessibility, especially when my clients are dressed to impress or have small children in tow. The last thing I want is for you to be hiking through rough terrain in heels or worrying about your kids' safety. Whether we’re shooting in the lush green forests of the Sisters Wilderness or the high desert badlands, I’ll ensure the location is not only beautiful but also easy to navigate.

Adapting to the Seasons

Bend is a photographer’s paradise with its ever-changing seasons. Spring, summer, and fall are my go-to times for photoshoots, each offering its own unique charm. The vibrant colors of fall are perfect for family portraits, while summer’s long days and warm weather make it ideal for engagement sessions. That said, I also love it when my more adventurous clients want to head up into the mountains during winter. There’s something special about capturing love and family against a snowy backdrop, even if it means bundling up a bit more!

Trusting the Process

When we’re planning your photoshoot, I like to give you a few location options that match your vision. This helps me get a sense of what you’re looking for—whether it’s something casual and laid-back or more formal and glamorous (which is always a personal favorite of mine!). From there, you can trust me to guide you through the process. I know it can be nerve-wracking to be in front of the camera, but I always remind my clients: “What percentage of my clients do you think are professional models? Zero! I got you guys! This will be fun, authentic, and easy, I promise.”

In the end, choosing the right location is about more than just finding a pretty spot. It’s about creating an experience that feels true to you, while capturing the beauty of Bend in a way that’s unique to your story. And while I do have a few hidden gems up my sleeve, I’m not one to give away all my secrets—but trust me, we’ll find the perfect place to tell your story.
