Hill Country Wedding Venues Near Austin: What to Ask Before You Book
The Hill Country west of Austin is one of the most popular places in Texas to get married. I'm a destination wedding photographer based in Austin, Texas, and I have a short list of questions I would want answered on any venue tour. I am not endorsing or ranking venues here. These are simply a few places couples often start with, and you should visit and confirm details yourself.
A few places to look at
Here are a few venues with their own websites where you can see photos and contact information: The Addison Grove, Camp Lucy, Prospect House, and Mae's Ridge. Please check each website for current details, since availability and policies can change. I also keep a page of Austin venues and vendors on my vendors page.
Questions to ask on the tour
What is the guest limit, and does it include vendors? What is included in the rental, and what costs extra? Is there a rain plan and where would it happen? Are there noise or end time rules? What are the vendor rules, and do you require a specific caterer or planner? Is there air conditioning or heat in the indoor space? Where can guests park, and is there a shuttle plan?
Questions that matter for photos
Where does the light fall at the time of your ceremony? Is there shade for portraits in the afternoon? Can we walk the grounds before the wedding? Are there restrictions on where photographers can go? Is the reception space dark, and are there rules about lighting?
Timing and the weather
Spring and fall are the most popular seasons. Summer is hot, so plan a late ceremony. I wrote about that in Planning a Wedding in the Texas Heat. For a look at seasons, see The Best Time of Year to Get Married in Austin.
Consider the drive
Many Hill Country venues are a drive from the Austin airport and from hotels. If you have out of town guests, read my guide on planning a wedding weekend for out of town guests. If you are comparing towns, I covered two of the best known in Dripping Springs, the Wedding Capital of Texas and Getting Married in Fredericksburg.
