Austin Park Photo Permits: What Couples Need to Know
If you are planning engagement photos, an elopement, or a small ceremony at an Austin city park, there is a good chance a permit is involved. Here is a plain summary of what the City of Austin lists. Rules and fees can change, so always double check the city's pages before you book.
When a permit is needed
According to the city's photo permit overview, a permit is required for professional photography (meaning the photographer is paid or the photos are made for promotion), for portrait or posed photography of people, and for any photographer using accessories like tripods, lights, or reflector shields while photographing people. Amateur or non commercial photography where none of that applies does not need one.
Which parks are included
The city's photo permit is listed for these locations: Auditorium Shores, Mayfield Cottage and Gardens, Mt. Bonnell at Covert Park, and Zilker Metropolitan Park.
What it costs and how it works
The listed fee is $50 per 2 hour session. A few rules from the overview worth knowing:
Each paid pass covers a 2 hour block. A photographer can book up to 2 sessions per day. Sessions cannot happen during confirmed rental events. Permit credentials must be displayed at all times.
How far ahead to book
The city says sessions can be reserved no more than 30 days in advance and no later than 4:30 p.m. four calendar days before your session. Booking is done online through the city's Parks Online system. That timing matters if you have a specific date in mind, because you cannot lock one in months ahead.
Holidays and special events
The city's special events page says photo sessions cannot take place during special events or holidays. Austin has a lot of big events, especially in some of these parks, so check the calendar before you pick a date.
A note on weddings and ceremonies
A photo permit covers a photo session. It does not cover a ceremony. For example, the city's Mayfield Park page says photography permits are required for personal sessions and that event rentals are required for weddings, proposals, and gatherings. If you plan to say your vows in a city park, look at the event facility rental process instead. The city's special events page says weddings can be booked through event facility rentals up to 180 days in advance, or about 10 months ahead using the lottery system.
State parks and other locations
The city permit is for Austin city parks only. State parks like McKinney Falls and Enchanted Rock have their own fees and reservation rules. Check with the park directly before you plan photos or a ceremony there.
Questions to ask your photographer
Do you book the permit, or do I? Which of these parks do you recommend for the look I want? What is the backup plan if the booking window does not line up with my date or if it rains?
Where to read the official rules
The City of Austin photo permit overview has the current fee, locations, and booking window. The special events policies page covers rentals. The Mayfield Park page has park specific rules.
